Merlin- Mise en scene.

The mise-en-scene used helps the audience to realise what time period the drama is set in. The area, clothes and props used all help us to realise it is set a long time ago. Also the castle and the fact that there is a lot of people all dressed in character with makeup and costumes on, suggests that there was a big budget.

Merlin- Editing.

The editing was fast paced, which appeals to a younger audience and crossed with the type of programme it will appeal more to males.

There is a shot when then men are shown to be fighting which shows men to be strong and courageous, and the editing throughout this bit it very quick and has a lot of different shots to make it seems like it is all very exciting and dangerous.

There is match on action used in this scene also when Merlin is dressing the other man into all of his fighting clothes.

There is also many special effects used, specifically when the equipment is cleaning itself.

Also in the 5-minute clip that we watched it was set over 1 day, 1night and another day that therefore meant that there was elliptical editing involved with cutting time out.

Merlin- Camera Work.

The camera work used throughout the first scene was simple but it had a lot of effects.

The shot that tracked along and showed all of the equipment magically being cleaned, showed that he wasn't doing it himself which could relate to the fact that men are generally classed as "lazy" and don't do work or what they are asked to.

Also the 180° rule was used during the conversation between Knight Valiant and Arthur, this was showing Arthur as being more powerful and showing his reactions to what Knight Valiant had to say. This was also used when Knight Valiant was talking to Lady Morgana, and it was showing the other fighters face. This was suggesting jealously which is a typical representation of a man.

When Merlin was in the room with all of the fighting equipment in and Knight Valiant walked in on him, there was a low angle shot of Merlin to show that he was least powerful and vulnerable, whereas there was a high angle shot of Knight Valiant, this would represent that he was higher up and more respected.
